Generic – VW Semi Auto 1968 rebuild. http://www.vwgeek.com Just another WordPress weblog Wed, 12 Aug 2009 10:47:05 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=5.7.2 New bonnet hinges (Installation) http://www.vwgeek.com/?p=1086 http://www.vwgeek.com/?p=1086#respond Wed, 12 Aug 2009 10:45:35 +0000 http://www.vwgeek.com/?p=1086 Further to the Previous post, i thought i would document the steps i installed the bonnet hinges on with. (please excuse the car as its in the middle of being done up).

img_4619

The above pic is just showing what and where the securing bolt and sir clip are. (I have removed the bonnet first to make life easy.).

img_4621

The above pic is a closeup of the 13mm bolt that needs removal.

img_4617

This is a closeup of the Sir Clip on the bottom of the original hinge.

img_4620

Above is a pic of the Cir clip off and the bonnet hinge bottom bit removed.

img_4623

Both stock hinges are now removed.

img_4624

New shiny shiny hinges attached to the bonnet. You can see the three adjustment holes for the bonnet to open different amounts (i ended up using the smallest one as it would just clear and i didn’t want to stuff around re adjusting).

img_4627

This is a closeup of one of the hinges with the new 13mm bolt (unsure if this is the correct side for that black spacer but it worked in the end :P)

img_4628

You need someone to help you hold the bonnet whilst you do up the nuts (otherwise you can expect to loose some fingers), Hi Joanne (My other half)

img_4629

Gas strut installed on the Left. It just pops into the hinge and pops onto the original hinge mount on the bottom (the one with the sir clip)

img_4630

Closeup of the RHS, again looking good (unlike the rest of the inside of the bonnet.)

[HTML2]

Here is a quick shot of how hot it looks opening and closing.

Now again i will apologize for the state of the car as I’m working on it as i get money and time, the car detracts from the awesome hinges. Again i cant say enough about them ;).

New VW Bluesport sports car ETA 2013 http://www.vwgeek.com/?p=673 http://www.vwgeek.com/?p=673#respond Sat, 06 Jun 2009 12:03:40 +0000 http://www.vwgeek.com/?p=673 Well here we go VW’s new Concept which has been green-lighted for release in 2013 at a rough cost of 20,000 pounds so thats abotu 55,000 Australian. Some quick details: 2.0-liter turbodiesel four mounted amidships. It puts out 180 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque and pushes just 2,600 pounds via a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Expect a 0-60 of 6.2 seconds and a top speed of 140, all while returning about 35 mpg on the European cycle and upwards of 62 mpg in “Eco” mode. But more importantly the engine appears to be back where it should be (in the ass end). All i can say is when can i get one please. 😉 See after the pics for the press release.

Detroit 2009: World Premiere of the Concept BlueSport

Volkswagen celebrates comeback of the compact roadster
Wolfsburg/ Detroit, 11 January 2009 – Maximum driving fun with minimal fuel consumption: This is the standard by which Volkswagen is starting the new car year 2009 and is presenting the roadster Concept BlueSport at the North American International Auto Show. “The BlueSport proves to be a compact and passionate car with a clear Volkswagen signature. The car offers pure dynamics with a powerful 180 PS Clean Diesel engine that is combined with the characteristic Volkswagen philosophy of efficiency,” confirmed Volkswagen’s Chairman of the Board, Prof. Martin Winterkorn in Detroit.

The Concept BlueSport is making its appearance at the car show in Detroit with a Flex Silver exterior and orange fabric convertible top. “It is the symbiosis of outstanding technology and timeless Volkswagen design that makes this car an exceptional sports car. Its styling is clear and is reduced to the essentials; the car body itself has a lean and linear structure”, explains Volkswagen chief designer Walter de Silva. The interior shows finesse in details and conveys a high level of technological fascination. Immediately visible to the eye is the intuitive and easy to operate touchscreen. Perfectly adapted to the interior are the leather upholstered seats in lightweight construction with their single-piece seatbacks.

Behind the two sport seats of the 3.99 meter long Concept BlueSport, a 132 kW / 180 PS strong Clean Diesel (TDI) with common rail injection and downstream NOx storage catalytic converter delivers dynamic performance. A 6-speed DSG dual clutch transmission – the most economical and agile transmission system in the world – transfers power to the rear wheels. In just 6.6 seconds the sports car is moving at 100 km/h; its top speed is 226 km/h. Also having a positive impact on the car’s low fuel consumption of just 4.3 l/100 km and reduced emissions are two technologies that are part of the so-called Eco mode: an automatic start-stop system and energy regeneration. Together they propel the Concept BlueSport to an additional fuel savings of up to 0.2 liter per 100 kilometers in city driving.

Another beetle? Autostick issues? http://www.vwgeek.com/?p=255 http://www.vwgeek.com/?p=255#comments Sat, 04 Oct 2008 04:10:17 +0000 http://www.vwgeek.com/?p=255

Well i guess the VW bug has bitten me, And i saw another Automatic stick shift beetle on ebay and grabbed it for $750. Good body, its a 70’s model with early 60’s guards. The story of getting it is pretty funny, I went to pick it up and the guy comes out telling me it doesn’t have a battery.. so off i go and grab a battery (even though a battery was there the day before), come back get in start her up and oh its out of petrol… Man i couldn’t believe it so off i went and got petrol. So finally I’m on my way chugging along at a nice 50kph when bang the front left tire came off, turns out that all the bolts on all the wheels were undone, luckily enough i had the right socket with me and did it up and brought the new beetle home.

The motor a bit of a mess (i took the oil cooler off), the automatic choke and cutoff solenoid were unplugged as well as a few of the autostick pipes were falling apart. So slowly getting her back to what she should be. Changed the oil that was disgusting piles of silt on the sump plate and when i touched the oil i could feel the dirt in it (yuck).

Just a picture showing the paint work, i get the feeling that the paint work was one of those rattle can jobs but it looks bloody good.

The brakes felt like they had air in them and after about 30 minutes of shouting “stop” “pump” to my girlfriend we had the air out (thanks to the back right drum), i continued on around the car getting any and all air out and any crap that was in the lines too (a lot of crap the fluid was black on some and white on others :S) {P.S look at how bald those tires are, will need some new ones}

Had finished doing the back left wheel getting the air out when the actual nozzle snapped leaving part of it in the brake, luckily for me it is broken off in the closed position and isn’t leaking brake fluid, i will need to take this somewhere to get fixed at some point. (yeah please forgive my car on bricks and wood the actual axel stands are up with my other beetle.)

[HTML1]

Just me firing through the gears while she is on blocks. What am i going to do with it i don’t know yet. Was originally for parts btu shes in such good condition its a shame.

VWs @ Royal Adelaide Show 2008 http://www.vwgeek.com/?p=216 http://www.vwgeek.com/?p=216#respond Sat, 13 Sep 2008 08:43:52 +0000 http://www.vwgeek.com/?p=216

I actually went to the show last weekend expecting the VW’s to be at the Royal Adelaide Show (Like a giant carnival that lasts 2 weeks every year) but i was mistaken and they were this weekend (so i spent another $40 to get in to see the VW’s :P). It was a fairly good turnout with about 30 cars on display (And with the promise of free entry to the show for VW’s who can blame them?)

Okies so yeah click the pics to see a bigger pic. 🙂 So overall a nice bunch of classic VW and a few new ones. I also signed up for the VW club of SA (as i keep putting it off and this looked liek a good oppertunity, even if the other half wasn’t to happy about me forking over $45.

Just quickly, i was driving home and took a picture of the sun and when i got home i found what looks liek a UFO?? I want to believe 😛

The beginning, http://www.vwgeek.com/?p=3 http://www.vwgeek.com/?p=3#respond Sun, 10 Aug 2008 12:58:08 +0000 http://www.vwgeek.com/?p=3 Where to start?
My beetle is a German 1968 Beetle with the Auto Stick option.
It is running a 1600 twin port stock motor (1969 going by the engine number).
I got this beetle back in 1993, she was a daily driver until 2006 where I purchased a newer car. From 2006 till now she has sat in the shed getting a drive on the weekends. I always had the plan to restore her but money never really permitted this, and every time I was ready to do something she would get hit by another car (100% of the time a ford :P). See picture where she was repaired from one of the many cars driving over her nose.

To the present I knew the beetle was in good condition no rust visible, at the same time she is still damaged from a guy who hit the front. (Don’t ask about insurance I was insured but it didn’t make a difference I never saw any money). I finally got enough money together to start restoring her, or should I say improving her.

Stay tuned for more updates.
